Diversity Committee Events and News

In May 2012, the Women's Connection of Bose McKinney & Evans spent an evening at the Indianapolis Arts Center for a "Pop Up" painting class.  The women had a great time releasing their creativity onto canvas.

To celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in 2012, the Diversity Committee organized a book drive for School on Wheels, which provides one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy for school-aged children impacted by homelessness. Employees of Bose McKinney & Evans and Bose Public Affairs Group donated more than 300 books, nearly $300, and numerous school and personal supplies to School on Wheels. The Diversity Committee also held an evening reception at the firm during which the life and impact of Dr. King were honored in words and photos.

Bose McKinney & Evans participated in the "Super City Clean & Green" initiative sponsored by the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee. As part of the initiative, employees from Bose McKinney & Evans cleaned up Highland Park located on the near eastside of downtown Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee identified 32 Indy Park's properties to refurbish and beautify. More than 500 Indianapolis-area citizens from 33 businesses, schools and non-profit organizations gathered to participate in the effort. Super City Clean & Green is believed to be one of the biggest park-service projects in the history of Indianapolis.

Bose McKinney & Evans is a proud participant in the Providence Cristo Rey High School's Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). CWSP serves Indianapolis students from families with limited economic resources, allowing them to take ownership of an affordable, quality, college prep education. Businesses contract with the program to outsource their clerical jobs for an annual fee. The fee is a business expense, not a donation. Student-workers are put into job-sharing teams and their academic schedules are modified so that five students job share a full-time entry level job without missing class. CWSP is the students' employer, handling all payroll, Workers' Compensation, taxes, Department of Labor and other employment issues. Via the CWSP, Providence Cristo Rey students earn a portion of their tuition, making the dream of a safe, affordable, faith-based, quality college-preparatory education a reality.

Bose McKinney & Evans and Bose Public Affairs Group were proud to support The Mayor's Celebration of Diversity Luncheon.  Attorneys and lobbyists attended the January 20, 2011 reception and the January 21, 2011 lunch, both held in downtown Indianapolis.

On January 17, 2011, Bose McKinney & Evans celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The Diversity Committee asked members of the firm to ponder Dr. King's quote, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" The committee organized a luncheon to bring together the firm for camaraderie and conversation.

In the fall of 2010, an off-shoot of the Diversity Committee formed:  The Women's Connection provides a forum for the women of Bose McKinney & Evans and Bose Public Affairs Group to promote and create opportunities for mentoring, networking, recognition, community involvement, business development and professional development within the firm and in the external business community.

In October 2010, the Diversity Committee organized its second annual Community Day (see photos below). More than 30 attorneys, staff and their families and friends volunteered at local charitable organizations. One team planted 35 trees on the west side of Indianapolis as part of a beautification project coordinated by Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. Another team volunteered at Thrifty Threads. The majority of that group hung clothes, tagged them, and put them out on the shop floor so that Julian Center residents could look for items to restart their lives. If the clothes aren't sorted, hung and displayed, it creates a huge backlog when new donations arrive. Other volunteers were tasked with some heavy lifting on that Saturday morning -- as Thrifty Threads gets furniture donations, the shop floor must be reorganized for people have access to the furniture. Volunteers also spent some time reorganizing the garage where Thrifty Threads stores clothes that are no longer useful and must be recycled. The third team arrived at the Hamilton County Humane Society, which houses 200 dogs and 600 cats, so the help of volunteers was really needed! Our volunteers washed bowls, toys and even litter pans -- not glamorous, but necessary. The team also did several loads of laundry (pet bedding) using industrial-sized washers and dryers. The last job was to give fresh water to several of the animals. This duty gave volunteers some time to pet and talk to the dogs and cats awaiting new homes.
