On June 18, 2014, we hosted nearly 40 high school students interested in learning more about the legal profession. Students were 9th through 12th graders from IPS, Park Tudor, several charter schools, as well as home school students from the Indianapolis area.  In Conjunction with Just The Beginning – A Pipeline Organization (JTB-APO), we held a negotiation exercise where students learned about various negotiating styles, then utilized those techniques in an mock negotiation session based on the 2011 NBA Lockout.
After lunch, students broke into groups, studied their roles as owners or players, and then jumped head first into an intense round of negotiating.  The students reconvened in the Monument Circle Room and reported back on whether or not agreements were reached, how they went about negotiating, and what they took from the activity.
During the same week, the students spent time working on oral arguments, meeting local leaders and visiting other firms.
There were several members of BME that were extremely helpful in the planning and execution of this activity:
Bryan Babb
Chris Chase
John Huang
Sandra Hurley
Adam Mills
Joel Nagle
Marie Smith
Phil Zimmerly
This was a great opportunity for our firm to showcase our commitment to the next generation of lawyers and professionals.  We hope to continue to support not only JTB-APO, but other similar groups seeking to develop future leaders.
